Osaka itself has Sumiyoshi Taisha, one of Japan's oldest shrine designs, and the lion-head stage of Namba Yasaka, but the city's real value is as a base. Nara's Todai-ji, Kofuku-ji and Kasuga Taisha are under an hour away by Kintetsu train, Horyu-ji is a short JR ride, and Kyoto and Uji are within an hour too. Mount Koya, about two hours by Nankai train and cable car, and Ise Grand Shrine work better with an overnight stay than as rushed day trips.
