In Nepal Hindu and Buddhist worship overlap: Hindus pray at Buddhist stupas, and Newar craftsmen built pagoda-roofed shrines for both faiths. Nine of the catalogue’s 15 entries are Hindu and six Buddhist. The Kathmandu Valley holds the core: Pashupatinath on the Bagmati with its cremation ghats, the stupas of Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, Dakshinkali in the southern hills and Changu Narayan near Bhaktapur. Pokhara adds the World Peace Pagoda and the island shrine of Tal Barahi; Lumbini has the Maya Devi Temple at the Buddha’s birthplace. Others are journeys in themselves: Manakamana by cable car, Muktinath high in Mustang, and the gompas of Langtang and Dolpo on trekking routes.

Go early: dawn circuits at Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, morning puja at Pashupatinath and Dakshinkali, where Saturday sacrifices bring long queues, and clear mountain views at Pokhara before the cloud builds. Non-Hindus stay outside the inner shrine at Pashupatinath, shoes and leather come off before sacred ground, and stupas are walked clockwise. October and November bring the clearest skies.
