Shanghai’s temples are working Buddhist and folk temples squeezed between tower blocks, most of them rebuilt in the late Qing period and busy with incense from early morning. The Jade Buddha Temple, with its two white jade Buddhas brought from Burma, is the first to see; then Jing’an Temple, its gilded roofs facing Nanjing Road West; then Longhua, the largest and oldest complex in the city, with a seven-storey pagoda at its gate.
