Best temples in Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is the base for the great ninth-century temples of central Java, built by rival Buddhist and Hindu dynasties within a few generations of each other. Borobudur, the largest Buddhist monument in the world, rises in terraces of carved reliefs to a summit of latticed stupas; Prambanan is a cluster of soaring Hindu towers to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. These two come first, and Plaosan Lor or the hillside Candi Ijo make a quieter third.

The temples fall into two groups. Borobudur, Mendut and Pawon stand on one line about an hour north-west of the city, and Prambanan, Plaosan Lor and Ijo lie east on the road towards Solo; seeing both groups in one day is possible but rushed. Climbing Borobudur needs a separate timed ticket, with special sandals handed out at the start, so book ahead, and at Prambanan the Ramayana ballet is performed on several evenings a week.
