Cambodia’s temples are of two kinds: the stone sanctuaries of the Khmer empire, first Hindu and later Buddhist, and the working Theravada pagodas where monks live today. Most of the catalogue lies in the Angkor park outside Siem Reap: Angkor Wat itself, the face towers of the Bayon, the tree-gripped Ta Prohm, Ta Keo, Ta Som, Banteay Samre and the early Roluos group. Further afield, Koh Ker, clifftop Preah Vihear and Banteay Chhmar near the Thai border reward a long day out, and Battambang has the hill temples of Phnom Banan and Ek Phnom. In Phnom Penh, the Silver Pagoda in the Royal Palace and Wat Phnom are the landmarks, with Oudong and Phnom Chisor within a day trip.

One Angkor pass covers the park; Koh Ker and the outlying sites charge separately. Sunrise at Angkor Wat means crowds at the ponds, so go on to the Bayon and Ta Prohm straight afterwards. Shoulders and knees must be covered, a rule enforced at the upper levels. The cool months from November to February are the best time.
