Tours to Preah Vihear province leave from Siem Reap. The usual day goes to Koh Ker, the short-lived tenth-century capital with its seven-tiered pyramid, roughly two and a half hours by road, combined with the jungle ruin of Beng Mealea on the way. Preah Vihear temple itself, on a clifftop by the Thai border, is three to four hours each way and makes a very long day. Koh Ker needs its own ticket, not the Angkor pass, and leaving at dawn helps with heat and time.
