Best temples in Siem Reap

Nearly every temple on this page belongs to the Angkor archaeological park, the former Khmer capital, where Hindu and later Buddhist sanctuaries of sandstone and laterite were built between the ninth and thirteenth centuries. Angkor Wat comes first, for its moat, five towers and galleries of bas-reliefs; then the Bayon, with its smiling stone faces at the centre of Angkor Thom; then Ta Prohm, where silk-cotton trees grip the ruins. In town, Wat Bo is a working monastery with fine painted murals.

The small circuit links Angkor Wat, the Bayon, Ta Keo, Ta Nei, Ta Prohm and Banteay Kdei; the grand circuit adds Ta Som and East Mebon, with Banteay Samre further east and the Roluos Group, the oldest temples here, south-east of town. Distances are long, so hire a tuk-tuk or car. One Angkor pass, bought at the ticket centre or online, covers every temple, shoulders and knees must be covered, and only Angkor Wat opens early for sunrise.
