In Morocco the most visible religious buildings are largely closed to visitors, since non-Muslims may not enter most working mosques. The great exception is the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, finished in 1993 on a platform over the Atlantic, with a 210 m minaret and guided tours of the prayer hall. Elsewhere the catalogue’s mosques are seen from outside or from the doorway: the twelfth-century Koutoubia, whose minaret is the emblem of Marrakesh; Al-Qarawiyyin in the Fez medina, founded in 859 and often called the oldest university in the world; and the Friday mosques of Chefchaouen, Tangier, Essaouira and Agadir. The Ibn Danan Synagogue in the Mellah of Fez recalls the country’s once large Jewish community.

Hassan II is the one to plan for: English-language tours fill at busy times, so book ahead or come for the first tour of the morning, and expect fewer tours on Fridays and changed hours in Ramadan. Cover shoulders and knees everywhere, take shoes off inside, and keep clear of mosque entrances at Friday midday. The Ibn Danan Synagogue closes on Saturdays.
