Best temples in Mexico

Mexico’s temples in this catalogue are the pyramids and sanctuaries of pre-Hispanic cities, all archaeological zones run by the national institute INAH. Teotihuacan, north-east of Mexico City, has the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon on the Avenue of the Dead. The rest are Maya: Palenque in the Chiapas rainforest, with the finest reliefs and inscriptions the Maya produced; Chichen Itza and Uxmal, the great cities of Yucatan, with the small Puuc site of Xlapak near Uxmal; and on the Caribbean side Tulum, the walled port on its cliff, and Coba, with its raised white roads, both easy from Cancun.

At every site, be at the gate at opening, usually 8 am, before the coach tours from the resorts and the capital arrive in the late morning. At Teotihuacan Sundays are the busiest days, when Mexican residents enter free. The dry season from November to April is the best time.
