Best other sacred sites to visit worldwide

This group gathers temples of faiths that fit no other heading. Sikh gurdwaras centre on a hall where the holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, is read beneath a canopy, often beside a sacred pool, with a free communal kitchen, the langar, that feeds anyone who comes. Jain temples are marble mazes of carved columns and domes around images of the tirthankaras. The Baha’i Lotus Temple is a single silent hall open to all faiths, Cao Dai temples combine Buddhist, Taoist and Christian figures under the Divine Eye, and memorial temples honour the war dead or a private loss.

At a gurdwara everyone covers their head, with scarves provided, shoes and socks come off, feet are washed, and tobacco and alcohol are forbidden; sitting on the floor to eat in the langar is welcome. Jain temples ban leather, including belts and bags, ask for covered shoulders and knees and often keep phones outside. The Lotus Temple asks for silence, and Cao Dai temples let visitors watch the noon service.

The highlights are the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Jain temple at Ranakpur in Rajasthan, the Dilwara Temples at Mount Abu, the Lotus Temple in Delhi, the Cao Dai Temple in Ho Chi Minh City and the Temple of Leah in Cebu City.
