Best temples in Kathmandu

The Kathmandu Valley is where Hindu and Buddhist Nepal live side by side, and its four temples here show both. Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world and the heart of the Tibetan community, and Swayambhunath, the hilltop stupa watched over by painted eyes and monkeys, are the Buddhist pair; Pashupatinath, the great Shiva temple on the Bagmati with its cremation ghats, is the Hindu counterpart. See all three; Dakshinkali, a Kali shrine in a forested gorge, is for the adventurous.

Pashupatinath and Boudhanath are close together in the east of the city and combine easily, Swayambhunath rises on its own hill to the west, and Dakshinkali is about an hour south by road, busiest on Saturdays with animal sacrifices. Come at dawn, when devotees walk clockwise around the stupas, and follow them. Only Hindus may enter the main temple at Pashupatinath; others look in through the gates or from the terraces across the river.
