Largest temples in the world

Area is the hardest of these rankings to compare, because the figure measures whatever land is attached to a temple. Teotihuacan, Koh Ker and Sukhothai are counted as entire ancient cities, the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento as its archaeological park, and Nikko Futarasan Shrine as the mountain forest it owns, Mount Nantai included, so the top five run to tens of square kilometres without a single building to match.

For a temple designed as one piece, Angkor Wat, about 1.6 square kilometres inside its moat, is the benchmark, with Preah Vihear, strung along its clifftop ridge, close behind. The largest modern entries are mosques in the Gulf: the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat at 416,000 square metres with its grounds, then the state mosque in Doha and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.
