Around Hanoi the most rewarding are set in karst country: the Perfume Pagoda, reached by an hour in a rowing boat along the Yen stream and a climb or cable car to its cave shrine; Bich Dong near Ninh Binh, three small pagodas stacked up a limestone cliff; and the vast modern complexes of Bai Dinh and Tam Chuc. In Hanoi itself, Tran Quoc stands on an islet in West Lake. Unless you want huge crowds, avoid the Perfume Pagoda in the pilgrimage season that follows Tet.
