Temples near Bali

Southern Bali puts several major temples within an hour's drive: the courtyards of Batuan and the moated Pura Taman Ayun at Mengwi, and Uluwatu on its clifftop, where the sunset Kecak dance is the draw. Tirta Empul, Gunung Kawi and Besakih lie inland on the slopes of the volcanoes, and Ulun Danu Bratan sits in the cool Bedugul highlands. Public transport is thin, so hire a driver for the day and group temples by area. A sarong and sash are required at every temple and are usually lent or rented at the gate.
