Largest temples in Japan

Japanese shrines and temples often own forest, and that decides this ranking. Nikko Futarasan Shrine holds 34 square kilometres of mountain land, Mount Nantai included, and Enryaku-ji spreads across the summit area of Mount Hiei above Kyoto, so neither figure is a precinct you walk round. The Meiji Shrine's 70 hectares in Tokyo are a forest planted when the shrine was built. For ordinary temple grounds, Kofuku-ji in Nara and Kiyomizu-dera and Ninna-ji in Kyoto, each between about 9 and 12 hectares, give a better sense of scale.
