Ben Ezra Synagogue tickets and tours: which one to book

Entry to the Ben Ezra Synagogue is free, and there is no ticket, timed slot or skip-the-line option to buy; no tour of the synagogue alone is sold online. It stands in Coptic Cairo, the walled old quarter in the south of the city, and visitors pass a security check at the entrance to the enclave. The simplest way there is the metro: Mar Girgis station on Line 1 sits directly in front of the old Roman fortress of Babylon, and the synagogue is a short walk through the lanes behind the Hanging Church. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are cheap and easy from downtown or Zamalek. Many visitors see it on a half-day or full-day tour of Islamic and Coptic Cairo.

These are usually private or small-group trips with an Egyptologist guide and an air-conditioned car, and they combine the synagogue with the Hanging Church, the church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, the Coptic Museum and often the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As, sometimes adding the citadel or Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Entry tickets to paid museums may or may not be included, and lunch and tips are usually extra. A guide adds a great deal here, since the history of the quarter is layered and almost nothing is labelled. The page lists any GetYourGuide tours whose route passes the synagogue.

Visiting Ben Ezra Synagogue: what to see and how to behave

Ben Ezra is the best known of Cairo's synagogues and one of the oldest Jewish sites in Egypt. The congregation was here long before the Fatimid city of Cairo was founded; documents suggest the first synagogue on the site existed before 882 and may predate the Arab conquest. That building was demolished on the orders of the caliph al-Hakim in the early 11th century, rebuilt soon afterwards, and repeatedly repaired. The present building dates from the 1890s and was restored in the late 20th century. With so few Jews left in Egypt, it no longer holds regular services and serves as a monument. Inside is a richly decorated hall in a basilica-like plan, with a central reading platform, slender columns, a gallery for women, painted woodwork, and inlaid marble and star patterns on the ceiling and walls.

The Torah ark stands on the eastern wall facing Jerusalem. The synagogue is famous for its geniza, a storeroom where worn-out texts bearing the name of God were kept rather than destroyed. Over almost a thousand years it collected hundreds of thousands of fragments, letters, contracts, poems and religious texts, most of which were taken to Cambridge in the 1890s and have transformed the study of medieval Mediterranean life. In the garden behind is a fenced well that local tradition links to the place where the infant Moses was found in the reeds. Photography inside is usually not allowed, so ask the guardian before taking pictures.

Ben Ezra Synagogue: opening hours, ceremonies and the best time to go

The synagogue generally opens daily from morning until mid-afternoon, roughly 9 am to 4 pm, but hours change and it may close for security or restoration without notice, so check locally. Morning, soon after opening, is the quietest time, before tour groups make the round of Coptic Cairo. October to April is the most comfortable season in Cairo; from June to September the heat is intense by midday, although the old quarter's narrow lanes and stone interiors give some relief.

Friday and Sunday mornings are busier in the enclave because of services in the neighbouring churches, and Coptic Christmas on 7 January and Easter bring large crowds of worshippers. Allow 30 minutes for the synagogue itself and two to three hours for the whole of Coptic Cairo. Combine it with the Hanging Church, the cave church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, where the Holy Family is said to have sheltered, the Coptic Museum, and the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As a short walk to the north.
