Chiang Mai's old town packs temples within its moat: Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Chiang Man and Wat Lok Moli are a short walk apart, with Wat Suan Dok and the Silver Temple just outside. Wat Umong's forest tunnels and Wat Pha Lat lie on the slopes towards Doi Suthep, about 15 km up the mountain road by red songthaew. Wat Ban Den is an easy half day north. The White Temple in Chiang Rai is about three hours each way, so most people join a day tour.
