Which one to choose in South Korea

Haeinsa Temple vs Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Two temples in South Korea. Haeinsa Temple has 1 ticket or tour to book; Haedong Yonggungsa Temple has 3 tickets and tours to book. The table and the two notes below put them side by side; the full pages have what to see, the ticket and the timing for each.

Haeinsa Temple

Haeinsa Temple

Hapcheon, South Korea

Haeinsa does not sell tickets online, and since 2023 there has been no admission charge at Korea's major heritage temples, so you simply walk up from the car park. The only payments are for parking, food and any temple-stay programme you book. Overnight temple stays, with early-morning chanting, communal meals and meditation with the monks, are run by the temple itself and should be reserved in advance; they are the most memorable way to experience the place. The temple lies in the mountains of Gayasan National Park, far from the main tourist cities, and that shapes the options.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Busan, South Korea

Haedong Yonggungsa is a working Buddhist temple with no admission charge. You walk in through the gate, down the stone stairs and onto the rocks by the sea without buying anything; the costs are for the car park, candles and lanterns if you want to make an offering, and the stalls selling snacks and charms along the approach. There is nothing to reserve and no timed entry. The temple sits on the coast north-east of Haeundae, away from the metro, so most of what is sold online is transport and company. The usual product is a day tour of Busan by minibus or private car with a driver-guide, typically starting from Haeundae, Seomyeon or the cruise terminal.
