From Aurangabad, also called Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, tours reach two cave sites in opposite directions: Ellora, about 30 km and under an hour north-west, with its Buddhist, Hindu and Jain halls around the rock-cut Kailasa temple, and Ajanta, around 100 km and close to three hours north, for the painted Buddhist caves. A private car with driver, taking one site a day, is the usual choice. Ajanta closes on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays, so plan the two days around that.
