Namba Yasaka Shrine

Namba Yasaka Shrine

Osaka, Japan

Namba Yasaka Shrine is free to enter and there is nothing to book. You can walk into the grounds at any time, pray at the main hall and the lion stage, and buy charms or a goshuin stamp at the shrine office during the day. The only spending is on these small items. Most visitors come on foot. The shrine stands in a residential corner of the Naniwa ward, about ten minutes' walk west of Namba station and closer still to Daikokucho station on the Midosuji subway line and Sakuragawa station on the Sennichimae line.

Sumiyoshi Taisha

Sumiyoshi Taisha

Osaka, Japan

Sumiyoshi Taisha is a working Shinto shrine and costs nothing to enter: the grounds open at dawn, and there is no ticket, timed slot or queue to plan around. The only money most visitors spend is on a fortune slip, an amulet or a votive plaque at the shrine office, or a small offering at the halls. What is sold online is interpretation rather than access. There are guided walking tours that meet near the station and spend an hour or two at the shrine, explaining the rituals, the architecture and the gods of seafaring and poetry worshipped here, and private visits with a licensed guide for those who prefer their own pace or are travelling with children.
