Near a city
Mitaki-dera, a quiet hillside temple of moss and waterfalls, is the only entry inside Hiroshima. The main reason to look further is Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima, about 17 km away: a local train to Miyajimaguchi and a ten-minute ferry, so a half day is enough. Check the tide tables before you go, because the great torii appears to float only at high tide. Izumo Taisha and Motonosumi Shrine are over 110 km away and better done by car or as an overnight trip.
